Thailand: Buffalo Racing

Ok after you see this article’s name you might think if there is such thing. And yeah Thailand never lacks of surprises. Some of you might probably have seen it before on CNN or BBC. It is a really must see event.

The event occurs on October 13 in Chonburi Province, Thailand. Who would have thought that buffalos are built to race too, not just to work in the field? Thai farmers have managed to tweak a turn of speed from these working animals that is nothing short of amazing.

The races are taken very seriously by the owners of the buffaloes. It looks like horse racing combining with buffaloes running in Spain. Admittedly, mites slower than a race horse, but the buffaloes are no slouches when it comes to making a short dash for glory.

Although the most fun of the event is the racing, there are some more activities you can do or join like food stalls, handicrafts and a beauty contest. Winning the contest and becoming a Miss Buffalo might not sound so pleasant to you, however there are a lot of girls who are willing to join the contest and be in the limelight of the catwalk. The children can have fun by riding on a buffalo back.

Muay Thai 24 Cherng Sok: KWANG SABAD NAH

Now it’s time for to teach you the lesson. Just kidding! Today is our Muay Thai 24 Cherng Sok day. We have been doing this for months now and still really think that these articles of Muay Thai Boran’s techniques or Ancient Muay Thai’s techniques we have collected and put them here for you will be really useful for you and for whoever that is deeply interested in Muay Thai.

Today’s Cherng Sok move or Muay Thai elbow technique is called in Thai name “KWANG SABAD NAH”. “SABAD NAH” in Thai literally means “to shake the head”. But of course we don’t shake our heads in Muay Thai or any types of boxing you know that. “KWANG SABAD NAH” is the name of the shaking elbow used in Muay Thai.

Don’t get confused yet. Here’s what it is and how to use it.

First choose which elbow you want to perform this, left or right. You can use this move when your head is in a low level, for example, just about under your opponent’s armpit level will do or whenever you can’t balance yourself and put yourself in a low position. Then when you think your head is in that level you can start performing this move.

Let’s say your head is now pinned under your opponent’s LEFT armpit. Push your head out and together freeing your left arm. Place your left foot between your opponent’s legs and put your back foot rear. From now, turn your body to raise your right arm and swing it downwards to hit your opponent’s left knee. You can also hit his facing down face back after you attack his knee with your right elbow.

To the attack: Try to hold your opponent’s elbow in order to prevent it from hitting your knee or face.
To the defense: Use your left arm, pull down your opponent’s head and use your right elbow to attack his face.

Today in our Speak Thai will be a little bit different. Since we have been teaching you how to speak Thai for a while, today we want to teach you something new that can help you understand this country even more. Today we are telling you a story, a history in fact, about Chulalongkorn Day, what it is and how important it is to Thai people.

First of all I have to tell you where the name “Chulalongkorn” came from. “Chulalongkorn” is the name of our King Rama V, one of our most important kings in our history. What he did is abolish slavery in Thailand and a lot more mostly to modernize this country.

“Chulalongkorn Day” or in Thai “Wan Piyamaharaj” is celebrated on October 23rd each year to commemorate the death of the King. On this day, a lot of Thai people, governors and students will go to the Equestrian Statue at the Royal Plaza in Bangkok to lay thousands of wreaths and pink roses and take part in a special ceremony to pay homage to the memory of the most revered Thai king in recent history. This thing that we Thai do can show the world how much important he is and also the great love and great respect that we have for him.

In case you have a chance to be in Bangkok on the day, don’t forget to be a part of this memorable event. I totally understand if you don’t really get the feeling of Thai people when they talk about their kings with love and respect especially King Rama V. Many people also believe that paying respect to him will bring good luck and prosperity to the person and family. You will be surprised when visiting a Thai house where you often find picture of the King or of the King Rama IX, the present King.
