Welcome to our thai boxing video lesson! Today Muay Thai attacking technique we will learn is called the Horizontal Knee-Kick. Some of you might have already been familiar with the move but for the rest of us who’s still very new at this sport, don’t worry. In this article you will see a video demonstration made by us and the broken down instructions for you to follow easily. Let’s not waste any more time.

The Horizontal Knee Kick or Kao Tad in Thai is another interesting knee kick used for targets like ribcage and trunk. The move requires the boxer to grasp and pull one side of his opponent’s neck with one fist and raise the knee to the level of the aiming target and thrust it sideways to hit the target. The knee move has to be parallel to the floor making it horizontal. Let’s now take a look at our video on YouTube. You can also go see this video and the others on YouTube and click subscribe to receive more video updates from us. I’ve been very bad at posting the new videos up. But I will put some new ones very soon.

There are two way to do this move. First by using the rear horizontal knee and the other is to use the lead horizontal knee. Here are the how to do both of them.

The Rear Horizontal Knee-Kick can be done by first leaning a bit forward and over to your left and shifting your body weight onto your left leg and foot. Next grasp your opponent’s neck crosswise by using your right fist to grasp your opponent’s neck on his right side. This way will block your opponent from trying to escape from the coming knee attack. Then prepare your right knee by lifting it out to the side up to the level of your intended target. Keep in mind that you have to keep your toes pointing at the ground to make your knee pointing and strong. Lastly is time to deliver the kick. Pull the opponent’s neck downward and use your left foot as a turning point to twist your body round quickly to the left and at the mean time flip your knee over to the front making your leg parallel to the ground before thrusting your knee horizontally into the target.

The Lead Horizontal Knee-Kick is quite different is not that comfortable to perform. But if you are ready and confident to do this move with your left knee or in case you are left-handed. Do it by transferring your body weight on your right leg instead and grasp the left side of your opponent’s neck with your left hand. Then raise your left knee out to the side at the level of the target keeping the toes pointing downward to the ground. Instead of using your left foot as a pivot, use your right foot and twist your body round to your right before flipping your left knee to the front parallelize the leg to the ground and thrust the point of your left knee into the aimed target.

That is it with the Muay Thai Knee-Kick technique. You can check out more of these lessons in our previous articles or come back for more next month. See you then!

Muay Thai Weapons

At the beginning, Muay consisted of an arsenal of nine weapons- head, fists, elbows, knees and feet. However, in today’s Muay Thai rule, using the head as a weapon to attack the opponent is not permitted. That’s because being able to use the other 4 weapons-fists, elbows, knees and feet are more than enough comparing to other Martial arts in the world like Taekwondo or Judo that only allow the fighter to use only and hands and feet in competition. Muay Thai is considered very unique that uses all parts of the body in both training and fighting.

One of the most basic keys in Muay Thai learning is to know all Muay Thai weapons and to learn how to coordinate the four of them and the five attacking techniques they produce which are punch, elblow-strike, knee-kick, kick and foot thrust. Great Muay Thai boxers have to encapsulate that they must practice and aim to be equally skillful in using all of Muay Thai weapons. To be good at just one weapon and bad at the others or at just another will put you in a disadvantage.

For Muay Thai newbie, trying to perfect a few varieties of each attacking technique can be quite confusing. You won’t know which one should be done first and what to follow. What the difference between doing it horizontally and diagonally? What should I do with my arms at this time? Can I do or apply other techniques beside this one? That’s why you need to learn as many Muay thai techniques as possible to be able to improvise them and use them effectively.

You can check out our Muay Thai lessons categorized by the use of each weapon in our Muay Thai video section. We have done quite some and there are more coming soon. So don’t forget to check back at this blog for more Muay Thai lessons with video demonstrations for free. Or you can subscribe to our YouTube videos to receive the latest video we post. Just a thought: which Muay Thai move is the easiest for you that you learned and be able to do it effectively so quick and which technique is the hardest and you are having a hard time perfecting it? Leave your answer in our comment to share it with the rest of us.

Muay Thai 11 Cherng Kao: Prang Sattroo

Welcome to our Muay Thai article right here in our blog once again. Today is finally the time for our next Muay Thai Boran’s lesson or Ancient Muay Thai lesson. We have been discussing about Muay Thai Knee kick techniques in these few months and we will continue until it’s over then we will move on to the next weapon of Muay Thai. Check out our past lessons on Muay Thai Punch and Elbow moves in our previous articles in this blog if you have not because you don’t want to miss those good stuff.

Today’s ancient move is called Prang Sattroo. Don’t ask me why that name. I have no idea and I don’t think it’s that important to know. It is used to call a knee kick move: side knees kick to be specific. I’ll tell you how and when to use it and how to deal with it if you have to face the move in the ring.

Prang Sattroo or side knees is a Muay Thai Ancient knee move that is used primarily for attack and defense. The perfect time to use this boxing technique is when your opponent is losing his balance. And it’s the perfect time because the side knee kick can become very effective since your opponent will have a very little chance of defending against it. Combine together your left elbow hit to the face of your opponent with your left knee to the same target area: face, chin or chest of your opponent.

Now you will have to know what to do when dealing with the move as the attack and the defense.
To deal with the attack: As a boxer, use both of your fist in guard to protect your face and head area from the coming elbow hits. Bend your elbow joints and make sure that the tips of your fists are pointing at your head. And also use your arms to protect your chest area from the side knee kicks. To avoid the attack to give you a few second to come up with your own attacking move, you can quickly step backward to escape.

To deal with the defense: You can twist your torso to the left or the right, depending on which knee and elbow your opponent is using. Moreover, you can also move a bit closer after you have regained your power back and throw a quick elbow blow to the boxer’s ribcage.

This might be hard without demonstration. Give it a lot of practice. You can ask your personal Muay Thai trainer for advice. It’s good to practice every new move under observation of your master, so that you don’t learn and memorize bad things until they become habits and hard to correct later. Alright, thanks for visiting us today. Come back for more of Ancient Muay Thai moves next month or if you want, please check out our other articles in the block because you will find lots of cool things about Muay Thai boxing. Today I chose to match a couple items from Top King factory since last time I was talking about Top King shorts so why not continue matching a pair of cool Top King Muay Thai trunks with a pair of nice gloves.

I’m not going to talk about the quality anymore because you might have got the idea that this well-known Muay Thai factory has created good reputation in making good quality Muay Thai products and they are keeping it that way. After they changed the brand from King Professional to Top King, they have launched new products with better and cooler design and a lot of time I really believe Top King makes the best looking Muay Thai equipment and clothes so far.
