Thai Boxing Learning Video 10: The Mid-Air Elbow Strike

Hey have you enjoyed our boxing learning clips so far? I didn’t have time to put more in YouTube. I got all the video clips files on my computer but can’t find time to add them on YouTube. Anyway I think I’ve got pretty good feedback for our Muay Thai learning clips, so I will keep doing it until finish as many Muay Thai moves as possible.

Today’s boxing clip is called in Thai “Sork Kradode” or “Kradode Sork”. It’s great for targets like head, face or collar-bone just like the elbow chop in our last Muay Thai learning video but a little harder to perform. Basically, in this move, you have to use any type of elbow strike like horizontal elbow (I would personally recommend the elbow chop for this technique) while jumping in mid-air. The most successful hit is to jump as high as possible and strike the target just when you’re starting coming down or landing on the ground because with the body weight the strike is much more powerful. When landing, remain the position of your feet of the boxing stance. You can land both feet together or one at a time.

Here’s the step by step. Take off into the air as high as possible. Bend your knees a bit for extra power before springing yourself up. Twist the body to the left just like when you’re doing the elbow chop. And at the point of landing, strike the point of your elbow down on your opponent’s head forcefully and rapidly.

Alright, that’s it for today muay thai clip. Hope you like it. Give it a try with your trainer. Come back if you like the result! See you soon.

Muay Thai 11 Cherng Khao: Kumpan Poong Hok

Wow, can you believe it? Now we finally start with another important Muay Thai technique or let’s say now we have moved on to the next Muay Thai weapon “knee”.

Khao is a Thai word for “Knee”. You will be hearing or seeing this word for at least another 10 lesson articles. And I can assure you that they will all be great. These might not be what you’ve learned from the gym you go to. Most of these are ancient Muay Thai techniques. But, trust me that you will appreciate knowing them.

Learn them. Practice them. And use them wisely when the chance comes. You won’t feel sorry you found my blog.

Kumpan Poong Hok is the name for the straight knees move. It is used for attacking, defending and escaping. How to do it is pretty easy. The boxer must first bend his right knee raising and throwing it towards the left. Before hitting the target with this knee kick, the boxer should twist his body to the right. The focused targets are such as the opponent’s abdomen or chest if you manage to get your knee that high. The most important thing that you need to focus when using any knee kick is the support. Make sure you can keep yourself balanced by using your left leg. At the mean time, also guard any counter attacks by raising your arms up to cover your vulnerable areas.

To an attack: Move away from incoming knee by twisting your body to the left or right. Or the boxer can use his left elbow to protect his left rib from the coming right knee kick.

To a defense: Shift the body weight onto your left leg and throw a forceful right foot kick at your opponent. Reverse the side of the leg and foot if the other boxer is using his left knee for the attack.

I hope that wasn’t too hard to understand. This is the most basic knee move that every Muay Thai boxer MUST learn. I hope you enjoy Muay Thai so far. Feel free to write some comments on the Thai Boxing lessons articles below. All comments will help us heaps improve the blog and we thank you for that. Thanks for reading and hope you see you here again soon. Enjoy!

Hello and welcome to the blog! That’s right, today’s article is devoted to Learning Muay Thai video. A friend and I have shooting these videos series hoping that they will be useful for those of you who want to learn Muay Thai at home. The moves are in slow motion. So you will see how to do each of them clearly.

The Thai Boxing elbow chop or “Sork Sap” is used for impacting on targets like face, head and collar-bone. At the right moment, this muay Thai technique is pretty easy to execute and surprisingly cause serious result. Basically, what you have to do is to bring the elbow down vertically to hit the target. The variations are you can also use both elbows at the same time for this job calling “Double Elbow Chop” or “Sork Sap Koo”.

This Thai boxing move can be used only when the opponent is shorter than you or is stooping down.

and here is the double elbow chop.

There are two ways to prepare the elbow for this. First, a more powerful method, you can raise you whole arm up straight and bring the elbow down vertically to the target. Second, raise and bend the elbow so the fist is over your shoulder then bring the tip of your elbow down.

There are two types of Muay thai elbow chop. Either using rear elbow chop or lead elbow chop.

The rear elbow chop is used when you’re at the boxing stance (the left foot in the front and using left elbow for the work). You will need to twist your body round including your shoulder, hip and extended right leg to the left. Then raise the whole arm straight up and bring the elbow down vertically to impact the head of your opponent.

For the lead Muay thai elbow chop, you don’t need to twist the body. Use your left arm to deliver the elbow chop straight down to the target.
Alright, that’s it for today. Come back later for next Muay thai elbow video. They’re free! See you next time.

Welcome back you guys! So how are my friends so far? Have you been perfecting the boxing moves I wrote about in this blog? And have you notice, this is our 24th Cherng Sork already. When you’re back next time, we are starting with something else. I’m thinking Muay Thai Knee moves.

The last Muay Thai elbow move is called “Naka Kluen Gai”. I don’t know why but it’s how the ancient Muay Thai boxers called it in the past. The best word to describe this boxing technique is the “Spiral Elbow”. This is quite an advance move. Extreme caution is needed when performing this technique. Here’s how.

The Spiral Elbow is normally used for defense and for escape from incoming attacks. To be able to execute this technique quickly, the boxer or in this case you have to open both elbows outwards. Keep the points of both fists next to each other and then start throwing the elbows alternatively left and right to strike the opponent’s chin. Do it as fast as you can and it will create more serious impact to the target. Step forward when necessary to keep balance and to be in a good range to the opponent to attack. This move will make the opponent unable to shoot any counter attacks.

To the attack: You must protect your jaws which are the main targets of this move from the pointy elbow attacks by holding your arm up to guard the face area.

To the Defense: Concentrate and watch out for the time when the boxer needs to get closer to you. Strike his solar plexus or any midsection with a fast strong kick.

I hope this is useful and that you have enjoyed my free Muay Thai lessons so far. And yes it’s about time to move on to another Muay Thai technique next time. At the mean time, perfect this move with your thai boxing master and get ready to learn more right here. See you next time.

The Boxing Learning Video 8: The Reverse Horizontal Elbow

This is our 8th video already. Can you believe that? Only a few more of Muay Thai elbow to go and after that we will go on and start the Muay Thai Knee moves. Don’t forget the review the old video we have talked about here, Muay Thai punching moves and the previous Muay Thai elbow moves. Suggest your friends who are starting to learn Muay Thai. These Thai boxing learning clips will be useful for them.

Anyway, so today’s video is called “Reverse Horizontal Elbow”. It can be called in Thai “Sork Gratoong” or “Sork Wiang Glab”. This attack is great for hitting the side of the opponent’s face as the target. The elbow is thrown horizontally outwards or reversing and synchronizing the movements of your elbow, shoulder, waist, hip and leg for perfection to attack the target.

There are two types of reverse horizontal elbow. One is normally used as an offensive move and the other is as a follow-on move when the use of other elbow attack is failed.

The Rear Reverse Horizontal Elbow works great for a follow-on move. You can perform this when other elbow attacks like the elbow slash or the horizontal elbow is failed to hit the target. Turn it into an advantage by retracting the elbow back and impact the point of the elbow against to side of your opponent’s head. For example, if you’re using the right horizontal elbow and it misses the target, swing the elbow further to the left and pull it back forcefully to the right along the same path to hit the target.

The Lead Reverse Horizontal Elbow, on the other hand, is used as a direct attack since at this point you are much closer to the opponent or the target. Do it by twisting your left shoulder, including waist, hip and leg to the right with power before swinging them back bringing the ready elbow horizontally back to impact the target with the point of your elbow.
