Welcome back to our weekly Speak of Thai article. Today’s lesson is quite interesting and useful. In what situation you can use this? Let’s say you meet someone at a restaurant or a party and you kindda get into a chat. And somehow want to know about the person a bit better! And you wanna know if the person you’re talking to is already married or not. You gotta ask ya? I mean you can guess, but better make sure by asking.
Asking if someone is married or not in Thailand is not rude at all. There are of course some answers for the question. One yes. One no or not yet. Here’s how you say it. I’ll just show you how to say the shortest and simplest way. So you won’t find it troublesome. The key word here is Tang-Ngan, which means to marry or to be married.
Kun Tang Ngan Rue Yang Krap? Are you married?
Tang Laew Ka. I’m already married.
Yang Ka. Not yet.
Nee-Faen-Chan-Ka This is my husband.
Nee-Faen-Pom-Krap This is my wife.
NOTE: we don’t really use the word “husband” and “wife” when talking in real life. Fan just simply means “boyfriend” or “girlfriend”.
Here are the rest of the vocabularies:
Laew - already
Yang - yet
Nee- This is
Faen - boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife
I think this is quite enough for today? I think I really should talk about Thai wedding tradition sometimes. So you get some ideas on how we do it. And what are the differences?
That wasn’t too hard and not many new vocabularies today. But anyway, if you have any questions, please ask. Or you want to know how to say something else related to this article, let me know. I’ll be back again with next week’s lesson right here at MuayThaiArt.com/weblog. SawaddeeKa.
